This year Boyne City High School was fortunate to add Mr. Jason Luneack to our staff. Mr. Luneack teaches an elective called Academic Support. The elective helps students learn organization skills, study skills, time-management, and self-advocacy. Mr. Luneack also helps with daily lunch supervision and has become a mentor to many BCHS students, including students who are not currently taking his class. Thank you Mr. Luneack for your support of BCHS students!

Mr. Jim Beckering, a veteran Art teacher, started a new tradition with the class of 2020. He makes a pottery cup for each Boyne City High School graduate. Mr. Beckering had been making cups for every graduate who had completed an Art course for about 5 years prior to 2020 but in 2020 with schools being closed because of Covid-19, he decided to make cups for all of the graduates. He has kept that tradition going ever since. Pictured is Mr. Beckering with this year's cups, some of the cups during the process of making them, and the finalized cups with a sharp looking blue glaze.

Each year, BCHS Physics teacher Mrs. Clausen takes her students on a field trip to Cedar Point, where students have the ability to apply the concepts they have studied in class and apply it to the "real world" as they study motion, momentum, potential and kinetic energies, velocy, and other Physics concepts. Thank you to chaperones Mrs. Clausen, Mrs. McDowell, and Chief Spate for taking our students on this wonderful experience! #boynepride #boyneinspires
This year's Future Educator Academy completed their final in-person meetup with a Digital Portfolio Mock Interview, reflections on how they might offer words of support for next year's class, along with hearing from guest speakers from the education industry. Boyne City Public Schools are thankful to partner with organizations who help to provide a safer community for our students.
One of those specific organizations is SAFE in Northern Michigan which "exists to prevent youth substance use, increase community awareness and create change through collaboration, education, prevention initiatives and environmental strategies of tobacco, alcohol and other substance use in Antrim, Charlevoix and Emmet counties."
From May 12th through May 26th, SAFE is providing the opportunity for community members to watch a substance use prevention video called Screenagers. Please see the description and flyer below:
Screenagers: Under The Influence: Addressing Vaping, Drugs, and Alcohol in the Digital Age, the third feature documentary in the Screenagers trilogy, delves into how the tech revolution has reshaped adolescence and its effects on substance use. The film debunks myths and depicts strategies parents and schools can use to encourage healthy decision-making, support teen mental health, set limits, and create healthy home environments. The film also includes many ways young people are using their wisdom and strength to help each other and themselves through this complicated terrain around substance use.

Field trips are an important part of expanding student educational opportunities and this spring Boyne City Public Schools have a variety of field trips planned for students from the Elementary, Middle, and High School.
Today, BCHS students from the Student Success for College dual enrollment class toured North Central Michigan College in Petoskey! These students from the Early College Program learned about what to expect in the 5th year of their program, enjoyed lunch at the Iron Horse Cafe, received their campus IDs, and completed a campus scavenger hunt. The Early College Program is a 5-year high school program, where our students earn both their high school diploma and an NCMC Associate Degree at the end of 5 years!
