Boyne City High School Students Advance to State DECA Competition
Following wins at the District DECA competition in December, the Boyne City High School (BCHS) team is off to the state competition in Detroit, Thursday – Saturday, March 14 – 16, 2024. At the December conference, held at Grand Valley State University, the team competed against eight high school districts, covering the westside of Michigan.
“I’m very proud of our students. They do an awesome job representing BCH and it is great to see them compete,” shares Myra Bryant, Boyne City High School Teacher and DECA Coach. “A special thank you goes out to the local business professionals who have helped train the kids in live scenario practice and have given advice to help prepare them for their competitions. In addition, we have also had some key chaperones and judges who have worked hard to make sure our kids have a great experience. It is so great to see our community support our DECA program,” Bryant adds.
Prior to the district and state conferences, students are required to take an on-line test that measures knowledge of business and leadership. The district and state conferences provide an opportunity for students to show their problem-solving skills through role-play and presentation events. These two areas are then combined in a final score to see if the students competing will move onto the next level of competition. “Out of Boyne City High School’s 16 students who competed at Districts, we had 10 who earned medals for the Boyne City High School Chapter this DECA season,” Bryant explains. “We also had a great group of students competing in their first District Conference role-play events.”
-Competing in their first roleplay were: Claire Jones, Mallory Morgan, Katie Hunt, Jaelynn Elzinga, Sarah Eaton, Kacey Gray and Peter Mastin.
-Earning a qualifying position, in an individual event, at the State conference in Detroit are: Sarah Eaton, Brianna Ager, Adonae Patton, Norah Frasz, Jacquelyn Dunlap, Jaelynn
Elzinga, Grabrielle Dunlap and Katie Hunt.
-Earning a qualifying position, in a team event, for the State conference in Detroit are:
Malorie Carter and Chelsey Hertel, Kacey Gray and Peter Mastin, Ava Tarsi and
Maureen Hautz.
A team send-off will be held at Boyne City High School on Thursday, March 14 at 8:30 am, prior to departure. If you see these students, be sure to congratulate them on their accomplishments!

Char-Em ISD and our 11 public school districts, 2 charter academies, and 5 parochial schools serve hundreds of students with disabilities each school year.
This school year, 1,330 students throughout the region have IEPs - Individualized Education Plans that help their schools accommodate their disabilities through programs and services provided by districts and Char-Em ISD staff members. Approx. half of these services are funded by the Special Education Millage that has been approved by voters since 1980. The millage request is up for renewal on the May 7, 2024 ballot.
Learn more about the millage specifics on the Char-Em ISD website: https://www.charemisd.org/char-em-isd-special-education-millage-renewal-on-the-ballot-may-7-2024/

Do you know of a current Rambler teacher, support staff member, coach, or director who has made a fantastic IMPACT on students in Boyne City Schools? Would you love to recognize them and let them choose a school classroom, program, club, or activity to have a $1,000 donation made by the Boyne City Booster Foundation in their name? We bet you do!
The Rambler Impact Award is a new program sponsored by the BC Boosters to promote and celebrate those staff who are inspiring our Ramblers. Three people must collaborate on the application; at least one parent and one current student must be on the nomination team. The application is simple: tell us all the fantastic traits of this impactful Rambler staff member and hit the submit button. Nominations are due by Friday, April 5th. Here is the link: Rambler Impact Award
